Syrian Domain Extensions: Who Can Register Them

Besides .sy and the Arabic .سورية, the Syrian registry offers extensions for particular groups, such as .edu.sy for educational institutions. This overview shows who may register which extension. Who Can Register a Syrian Domain?

• natural persons holding Syrian nationality
• legal entities with their effective place of management in Syria or ongoing activities there
• owners of a trademark or trade name registered in Syria

Extensions and Conditions

• .com.sy – commercial activity; open to everyone
• .net.sy – network operators such as internet and hosting providers; open to everyone
• .org.sy – non-governmental organizations; the name must be derived from the organization's name or activity, proof required
• .edu.sy – educational institutions recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education or the Ministry of Education; proof required
• .school.sy – educational institutions recognized by the Ministry of Education; proof required
• .gov.sy – government entities only; proof required
• .info.sy and .news.sy – media and press; the name must be derived from the entity's name or activity, proof required
• .co.sy – commercial; the name must be derived from the entity's name or activity, proof required
• .biz.sy – online commerce
• .name.sy – personal names as first name plus family name, e.g. aliothman.name.sy; only for the person who bears the name

If you belong to more than one group, you may register under several extensions.

Names That Cannot Be Registered Freely

Some names cannot be registered directly under .sy:

• names of governorates, cities, regions and countries (e.g. homs.sy) – only for government entities; others add a word or number, e.g. homs-accountants.sy
• professional names, personal names and languages (e.g. engineer.sy, ali.sy, english.sy) – only with an added word or number, e.g. ali-othman.sy or ali1.sy
• international trademarks (e.g. youtube.sy) – only with authorization from the trademark owner
• generic domain names such as biz.sy, as well as names of God, prophets, religions, sects and holy places – not at all

Name Format

• Latin names (.sy): letters a–z, digits and hyphens; must begin and end with a letter or digit; 2 to 63 characters
• Arabic names (.سورية): Arabic letters only, without diacritics, shadda or tatweel; must begin with a letter, must not end with a hyphen or contain two hyphens in a row; 2 to 63 characters; use hyphens instead of spaces
